Germany’s national carrier Lufthansa has increased its frequency on its popular Newquay Dusseldorf route to keep up with growing demand.
The German flag carrier Lufthansa has confirmed they will introduce an additional Wednesday departure to compliment their existing Saturday services between Newquay - Dusseldorf for Summer 2012.
Al Titterington, Newquay Cornwall Airport's Managing Director says 'The additional Lufthansa services between Cornwall and Germany is a great boost for Cornwall's tourism industry. The Cornish setting and the influence of the author Rosemunde Pilcher is a major attractant to German tourists. The service saw extremely good passenger numbers last year with a 46% increase from 2010, which has led the airline to increase frequency to meet the demand for air services directly to Cornwall'.
Cllr Chris Ridgers, Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for economy and regeneration said: ‘The decision of Lufthansa to increase the number of flights between Cornwall and Germany is further evidence of the increasing importance of Newquay Cornwall Airport to our local economy.’
Located on the banks of the River Rhine, Düsseldorf is one of the largest and wealthiest cities in Germany. It is a modern, vibrant city and a key European commercial centre. Visitors to the city can sample a wide range of cultural activities, including the many museums and galleries, the German Opera House and numerous theatres. During the summer months the city's night-time atmosphere comes alive and the streets are lined with alfresco dining and drinking at the cosmopolitan eateries and bars. Visitors to Düsseldorf are also perfectly located to access other German cities, including Dortmund, Cologne and Bonn.
Lufthansa opened up the Germany-Cornwall route back in 2007 due to the beautiful scenery and landscape of the Cornwall region which is extremely well known to Germans because of the major popularity of Rosamunde Pilcher novels which are regularly serialised on German TV. Since the introduction of the route, Lufthansa has carried nearly 4000 passengers.
Saturday flights from Newquay to Dusseldorf start in May 2012 with Wednesday flights starting in July 2012. Tickets are on sale now at www.lufthansa.com
