Madeira is famous for its natural beauty and is also known as the ‘floating garden of the Atlantic’, situated just 400 miles off the coast of Africa and just north of the Canaries Boasting a sub-tropical climate, an abundance of natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage, Madeira is an irresistible holiday destination for discerning holidaymakers. Before you even step foot on the island, you will be impressed by its breathtaking beauty; sheer cliffs, deep ravines and ragged mountain peaks soaring to over 1800 metres, which hint at the island’s volcanic origins. Famously referred to as ‘The Floating Garden’ of the Atlantic, Madeira’s rich botanical heritage is everywhere, from the many public gardens and colourful displays in and around the capital, Funchal, to the island’s luxuriant interior. In the countryside, you have the opportunity to see sugar and banana plantations, and vineyards that produce the famous Madeira wine, or walk along the many paths or ‘levadas’.

Levada walking is unique to Madeira. Narrow man made channels cover the whole of the island in a cleverly devised network to irrigate the farms and terraces in the drier southern part of the island. A walk on the paths and steps alongside the famous ‘levadas’ are the best way to appreciate Madeira's spectacular scenery and wildlife.

The main market in Funchal, Mercado dos Lavradores, is well worth a visit. Selling locally grown produce and handicrafts, it maintains a nostalgic atmosphere enhanced by the flower sellers wearing traditional costume.

Many of our featured hotels and apartments are located to the west, a short distance from Funchal city centre around the Lido area with its shops, cafes and restaurants. This is the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by!

No visit to Madeira would be complete without taking the cable car to Monte for the panoramic views at the top. Then, after a glass of Poncha (a drink made with sugar cane rum, honey, lemon juice and sugar), take one of the famous ‘toboggans’ along flower lined streets, back down to Funchal. These are wicker baskets guided by two traditionally dressed conductors. Friday marks an influx of sellers and the normally empty central court of the Lavradores market remains open until 20.00. Many of the farmers sleep there Friday evening in order to be ready for the 06.00am opening on Saturday
