Manchester's city centre shopping area is a compact square mile with hundreds of shops. With big names like Harvey Nichols, Selfridges standing alongside independent boutiques and vintage shops, there's something for every style.

The refurbished Manchester Arndale has over 240 shops under one roof and is the UK's largest inner-city shopping centre, home to the world's biggest Next and a flagship Topshop store.

The Northern Quarter, Manchester's creative, urban heart is home to countless independent outlets including the world famous Afflecks, a rabbit warren of a building where the trend setters flock to stand out from the crowd and shop at the 50 independent outlets over five floors.

Sports

If you're a daredevil, looking to hone a new skill or simply a keen sports spectator then Manchester is the place for you. Image depicting ManU

Manchester is an international sporting centre whose footballing pedigree speaks for itself. Take a tour of Old Trafford or the City of Manchester Stadium to get a first-hand flavour of Europe's most exciting football league. Since staging Commonwealth Games Sportcity has become home to many award-winning facilities. Sportcity is also home to the City of Manchester Stadium, the National Squash Centre, Regional Tennis Centre and other sporting institutes and hosts many national championships events.

If you like to get involved, then why not get on the track at the Velodrome and test your cycling skills at the official home of the British Cycling team? Bike and helmet hire is available for track taster sessions, so go on and see how the athletes train!

The Trafford Quays Leisure Village is the place for a perfect weekend where after shopping at The Trafford Centre you can whizz down a real-snow ski slope at Chill Factore, brave the indoor skydiving at Airkix, perfect your putt at Playgolf, and let your imagination run wild at Legoland Discovery Centre.

Events Image depicting Dining

A year-round programme of fantastic events in the city (many free to enjoy) means there's always a good reason to visit the city.

May 2010 brings a host of music festivals to the city including: Eurocultured, a street festival that brings together dance, street art and music; FutureEverything, the annual festival of art, music and ideas; indie music festival Hungry Pigeon and citywide dance festival Dot-to-Dot.

Later in the year there is the annual Manchester Jazz Festival in July and the colourful Manchester Pride event in August. In October there are even more reasons to visit as festival season brings the Manchester Food and Drink Festival, Comedy Festival, Literature Festival, Science Festival and music conference In The City.
